Determining our carbon footprint is based on the GHG Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard, the world's most widely used standard for calculating greenhouse gas emissions from companies and other types of organizations.
Our direct emissions (Scope 1) and emissions from purchased energy (Scope 2) from the fuel consumption of vehicles used by Kontram and the production of electricity and district heating purchased for our own use were included in our emissions calculation. For indirect emissions (Scope 3), emission sources for which reliable baseline data were available were included in the calculation. Such sources of emissions include the transportation and distribution of products imported and sold by Kontram Oy, including emissions during the life cycle of fuels, business travel of personnel, and waste generated as a result of our own operations. Our carbon footprint calculation was performed with the carbon footprint calculator of the OpenCO2.net platform. Conet Oy's owner-expert Sari Siitonen was responsible for the calculation.
The most significant of these emission sources were business travel (97.04 tons), emissions during transport related to the purchase of products for sale (73.92 tons), and emissions from energy purchased for own use (76.04 tons).
The figure does not include emissions from the manufacture of products we buy and resell to our customers, which we identified as a significant source of emissions. For products such as valves and measuring devices used in the industry, reliable and comprehensive carbon footprint data are not yet available. In the future, we will also encourage our suppliers to map this information so that we can include it in our emissions calculations.
As indicated by the calculation of the carbon footprint, we aim to reduce emissions from our own operations in accordance with our sustainable development operating principles, e.g., by the following means:
We prefer long-distance meetings and direct flights and, where possible, trains for business travel.
We procure electricity and district heating produced from renewable energy sources for our own premises.
We prefer carbon-neutral modes of transport and also offer them to our customers for use.
We focus our logistics operations on more energy-efficient and modern premises.
Our most significant impact on reducing the total emissions of our society is achieved indirectly by providing our customers in the industry with the most ecological and techno-economical equipment and solutions with which they continue to develop their own business to be more sustainable.
